Getting used to your progressive lenses: helpful tips for a smooth start

Switching to progressive lenses can feel strange at first. Some people adapt quickly, while others may experience mild dizziness, headaches, or blurred vision in certain areas. On average, it takes about two weeks to get fully comfortable—though everyone’s adjustment time is different. The good news? These symptoms usually disappear as your eyes and brain adapt. Here’s how to make the transition easier.

1. Give yourself time

Don’t expect instant comfort. Your eyes and brain need to learn how to work with the new vision zones in your lenses. Wear your new glasses as much as possible during the first two weeks—this speeds up the adjustment process, even if it feels a bit awkward at first.

2. Avoid switching back to your old glasses

Each time you do, your eyes have to re-adjust, which can make the process longer and more tiring. Stick with your new lenses to help your vision settle faster.

3. Use the right “viewing zones”

  • Driving: Look at the road through the top part of your lenses. For the dashboard, lower your gaze to the middle zone.
  • Climbing stairs: Look through the upper part of your lenses for better depth perception.
  • Reading: Use the lower part of your lenses for books, your phone, or a remote control.
  • Computer work: The middle zone is best for screens 0.5–1.5 meters away. You may need to slightly move your head up or down until it feels natural.

4. Be patient—comfort will come

These new habits will soon feel second nature. Most people adapt within two weeks, but if you still have discomfort after that, contact your optician for advice.
